This morning my female Swan, Gracie is not eating and keeps holding her neck and head the same way as if its stiff. I can’t see that it looks swollen. And I don’t see any marks or blood. I lost her mate 4 years ago to what I think was a snake bite as he had a couple of blood spots on his neck. I don’t know if this could be the same situation. We have a few Black Water snakes on the pond, nothing poisonous. We live on a private pond do I don’t know how she could have eaten anything that would cause her distress. I don’t know what to do for her. I’m worried especially if she’s not able to eat or drink.

    Hi Victoria

You need to remove her from the water if she is in the water. If she is unable to hold her neck up she may have ingested a toxin. If the neck is held up, but looks stiff, she may have sustained an injury or possibly has something lodged in her throat. In any case, we would strongly urge you to capture her and take her to a licensed waterfowl/avian veterinarian as soon as possible. If she stops eating or drinking she can become severely dehydrated and develop other health issues. The veterinarian may have to tube feed her and/or give her an i.v. for rehydration/digestion purposes. Please let us know how she is doing. The Regal Swan

    Hi Victoria
My name is sonia and I just read your post about your swan and being ill with her neck . We have something similar here … I do hope your swan is ok. May I ask how she is and what was it that caused her neck to lay back ?
    Kindest regards
